Wow, I was expecting to see the '89 Ken Griffey Jr. at #1, it's a popular card and noteworthy enough to add to anyone's library... and who doesn't have a copy? Sure didn't think the list would consist solely of 87-89 junk wax stars.

I'm a huge collector of "commons," simply because they're cheap to come by and I'm cheap! But seriously, there's no better way to "pad your numbers" than by grabbing a bunch of common cards. You can get those jumbo hangar packs from the retailers that have 100 cards for about $10 or less. It's a great way to pile up a bunch of those groovy '80s cards from Topps, Score, Donruss and Fleer. And they throw in a couple of pre-1980 cards as well just for funzies. Heck, probably 99 percent of my pre-1980 stuff is all commons, but they're fun, educational and just plain cool!

Say what you will about 1987 Topps production run, but the wood border is by far one of the best Topps base set designs of the past 30 years.

Nice article. It is fun to see these results that Zistle can get from aggregating their data.

However, I think you are in the minority on your 1987 Topps opinion. There is a lot of love for that set out there -- as a small sample, my avatar is a card from that set, and the Bo Jackson (Future Stars!) was voted the Champion "Gem of Junk Wax" in an online contest:

Great story! I just recently started to get my young kids into the hobby to have another activity to share with them; I hope the bond we form in this way is half as strong as what happened for Dennis Sr. and Jr.!
